A closed head brain injury occurs when there is trauma to the brain that does not result in a skull fracture. Although the skull has not been damaged, there may be very serious damage to the brain, which can have drastic effects on the victim and the victims loved ones. Many times closed head injuries are not accurately diagnosed because the injury is not as apparent as an open head injury. This is very risky and may cause harm to the victim because the injury is likely to go untreated.
A brain injury patient may undergo a battery of tests, such as EEG's and MRI's to look for brain damage. Unfortunately these tests are not always able to recognize certain brain problems, especially those located deep within the brain. To aid in determining if a person has suffered a closed head brain injury, a physician may administer a variety of tests that will assess if different areas of the brain are functioning normally. If it is proven that the patient has suffered a closed head brain injury, appropriate medical procedures will be performed.
